If you had to name your top three responsibilities in life, could you? We all have different responsibilities depending on our station in life. We probably have many similarities though, including our families, jobs, and churches. In the grander scheme and picture of things our responsibilities may actually be smaller - smaller in number, but greater in size.
As believers, we know we have a primary responsibility to love God, obey His words, and seek after His kingdom. With that same category in mind, we also have a responsibility to love and care for people around us.
One of Jesus’ disciples who became an apostle wrote this - 1 John 3:16 - This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for others.
The same sort of obligation that each person has to love God hits us square in the face with regards to others. This is not a passing suggestion. This is not a secret key to a successful life. The Apostle John was not the Tony Robbins of his day who taught life goals and winning. This command carries the same weight as loving God.
We have a high and holy obligation, a spiritual responsibility to love others. To even lay down our lives for others. That’s pretty definitive. That’s an important job. Surely, neglecting this command puts us in a place spiritually that we should never be.
Who are the people around you? How can you carry through with this responsibility to love, and even, if need be, lay down your life?
