Here in Luke 8, Jesus pauses as He was teaching through parables to give His disciples a clue as to why He used these stories and analogies. Some parables were a little confusing, but He didn’t teach in this way to misguide or confuse, but in order to bring out treasures of God’s truth within these mysterious stories. What seemed to be hidden was not meant to stay hidden. What seemed to be a concealed mystery was said in such a way to find and bring out in the open. This verse also teaches us some powerful principles in how we are to live our lives. Our lives are to be lived with transparency and intentionality.
As Jesus used parables which may have been confusing to some, they were meant to draw the listener to evaluate their own lives and how they understood the kingdom of God. They could be and can be understood with a heart of humility and a mind of faith. Our lives must have the same transparency that clearly shows our dependence in a gracious Savior. Surely we all have faults we would rather not be displayed out in the open, but our sins and failings only show how amazing God’s grace is in Christ.
In one point of view, it seems like it would have been easier if Jesus just said what He meant and meant what He said rather than giving us stories to decipher. However, there are layers and layers of eternal truths we find with each unfolding of these parables. They were spoken from the voice of heaven with direct intentionality. We, as well, need to live with this in mind. We have purpose and design to our lives. Our lives are not meant to be throw aways and frivolous. The God who formed the universe put us together. So we should live in His design and purpose.
Today, don’t live your life in secret or shame, live in transparency. Don’t be misguided and blown here and there by every wind, but live with purpose and intentionality.
