Many people in the Christmas season have so much going on like parties, shopping, planning, and so on, that by the time Christmas Day actually comes, it’s hard to just relax and enjoy. We don’t realize that for every party and celebration there are many people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make it happen. For example, when people go to restaurants for Holidays instead of cooking at home, because it’s more convenient, they may not realize that there are many others working to give you a relaxing day. The holidays may not actually be a holiday for some, but just an indicator of the continual stress and burden they carry all year long.
Here in Matthew 11, Jesus prays for those who were stressed out and burdened. The ones He prayed for had no spiritual holiday of rest, no peaceful leisure of mind, and no spiritual release from the burdens they carried all year long. Those who were enslaved and weighted down with a life and spiritual expectations they could never follow, needed help. And so, Jesus offers that rest and freedom they so desperately needed.
Yearly holidays may not be holidays for many because of certain burdens and stress, and because of undue expectations. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t live in such a way that we truly walk and work in freedom and strength. Jesus offers all of us, no matter who we are and what we do - rest. He offers strength from weariness. He offers freedom from burdens.
All that’s required of us is that we give our burdens to Him and learn from Him. Jesus says, “I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
