The weight loss industry is a reported $60 billion dollar a year industry. That’s an enormous amount of money from people who want to lose weight and be healthy. It’s not simply from people who may be overweight, but it’s also from people who want to remain fit and in shape. Of course, exercise is a big part of overall health, but so is food consumption.
And people will try almost anything to lose weight - the juice diet, the Atkins diet, the Daniel plan, the vegetarian plan, the two meal a day plan, the six meal a day plan. There are also supplements and shakes and a thousand other things. However, a consistent theme through all of the weight loss plans is portion control. Many healthy meal plans include not only choosing the right foods to eat - less fat, no high sugar foods - but also having restraint on how much is eaten.
The problem is that we are a generation of consumers. The more the better. And so our portion control is out of control.
I love the word usage here in verse 57. The Lord is our portion. If we could grasp that simple, but powerful concept - the Lord is and should be everything we need, then what a difference that would make. Yes, our spiritual lives need portion control. We need to stop filling our hearts and spirits with the toxic, high fat, sugary substances of this world. We need to only focus our consumption based on what the Lord provides.
With the Lord as our portion, with Him as all we need and all we choose, we will definitely lose the weight of the world and gain the spiritual health that He wants for us.
