As the older, more experienced Apostle John writes to believers everywhere, his mind no doubt, goes back to the words of Jesus after washing the disciples feet. This was a precious, vulnerable time, that the disciples experienced the humble sacrificial love of Jesus. He lowered Himself, to even washing the disciples feet, even the feet of the one who would later betray Him. And Jesus tells the disciples, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
John continues with this powerful truth to believers, he said, “this is the message you have heard from the beginning… love one another.”
This same truth has not changed for believers today. It’s as powerful and relevant now, as it was thousands of years ago.
So often though, we dilute the message, we change it and mold it into something entirely different. We mix in emotions and biases. We throw in social acceptances and civil justices. We begin to live by a set of guide lined rules of loving one another, that is simply an evolved humanistic moral code.
Let’s not muddle the message that Jesus gave to the disciples. Let’s not blur the lines of love with the gray slush the world dictates. Let this be the guide and rule for our interaction and and reaction with people, all people, everywhere: Love one another.
