James 4:14 - Why, you don’t even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.

Years ago I heard the question come up, “If you were to die tomorrow, what would you do today?” Many people said things like, they would do something they’ve never done before - travel, bungee jump, skydive, etc. Some said they would heal some broken relationships or say something to another person they never had the courage to say before. The most unique answer to that question was that one person would not do anything different. They would live their last day like any other day. The reason is because they were already living their life to the fullest the way they should.
James, in this verse, is specifically answering those who have the attitude of planning life so ahead that they never put God’s purpose or plans in sight. Those are the ones who say, “Today or tomorrow, we’ll go to this city or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” And James calls to their attention that this type of planning is shortsighted because you don’t know what will happen today or tomorrow or a year from now.
This lesson is not so much against being prepared, as we should be as much as we can, but about not having the Lord’s will at the forefront. Our lives are so short and temporary, who knows what will happen? Only the Lord does. So we say, “If it’s the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.”
If you only have today, what would you do different? Hopefully the same as you would do if you knew you had tomorrow, a year, or even a decade - living totally submitted to the will of the Lord.
