Ephesians 1:17 - I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

My paternal grandfather was a huge influence in my life. He was loving, kind, patient, and generous. Christmas at my grandparents house always had plenty of favorite foods, a joyous atmosphere, and a sense of belonging. Whenever it came time to exchange gifts, my grandfather wasn’t much for fluff or flattery though, but would give you the gift with a gruff, “here”. If you didn’t know him, you would think he hated giving gifts, but as you opened the gift it would always be something thoughtful and generous.
He wasn’t much for wrapping gifts either. I think that’s where my unskilled wrapping qualities come from. Many gifts from him would still be either in the store bag or in a store bag barely concealed with tape. Today, you can tell which gifts are from me by the shoddy wrapping quality.
We have been given such a wonderful generous gift from God, the Father, in His Son, Jesus Christ. This gift may have come to earth in what seemed to be poor quality of wrapping not fitting a king - a young unmarried virgin, born in a dirty manger. But this gift was from our Creator Himself, to give us hope and salvation. This gift may have looked liked it was given with a gruff, “here”, but it was heaven’s display of glory and wonder wrapped in a package of dirt and humility.
This gift was so that we could know God, that He could know us, that we could be in union together with our sin and shame wiped away by His sacrifice. Thank God for the gift of Christ in your life today.
